The central government opinion was notified by Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).</mark>

  2. <mark>Border Security Force (BSF) has launched a massive exercise, code named as</mark> <mark>Sudarshan</mark> <mark>, to fortify</mark> <mark>Anti-Infiltration Grid</mark> <mark>along Pakistan border in Punjab and Jammu. The operation was launched on 1 July and is expected to be finished within a fortnight.</mark>

  3. <mark>The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out 3 successful test firings of Nag missiles during both day and night in Pokhran firing ranges. With this successful trial of Nag anti-tank guided missiles is in final stages of being inducted into Army.</mark>

  4. <mark>Indian Army has placed an order for procuring Israeli Anti-Tank Spike missiles from Israel. The procurement was made under emergency purchases to meet operational preparedness of the army.</mark>

  4. <mark>Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has signed a $50 million deal with India to supply complementary Naval MRSAM systems to Indian Navy and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. IAI is a state-owned company of Israel.</mark>

  5. <mark>Indian Army has successfully conducted summer user trials of NAG, 3rd Generation AntiTank Guided Missile (ATGM). The test was carried out at Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. Trials were conducted by user team from Indian Army as per user defined trial directive in presence of senior officials of the Army and DRDO.</mark>

  6. <mark>The annual Joint Military Exercise</mark> <mark>‘Hand-in-Hand’</mark> <mark>between India and China will be held at Umroi, near Shillong, Meghalaya in December 2019. The two-week long company-level exercise will take place in 2nd half of December while the planning conference to finalise modalities for joint exercise will be held in August 2019.</mark>

  7. <mark>The 11th edition of DefExpo India- 2020 is scheduled to be held for 1st time in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The biennial Expo will be a 4-day event, beginning from 5 to 8 February 2020. It offers an excellent opportunity for Indian defence industry to showcase its capabilities and promote its export potential.</mark>

  8. <mark>Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 313, the 5th Dornier Aircraft Squadron was commissioned into Indian Navy at Naval Air Enclave, Meenambakkam, Chennai. The INAS 313 has been named as ‘Sea Eagle.’ It is commanded by Cdr Vivek Koman, experienced Dornier test pilot with extensive operational experience.</mark>

  2. <mark>India has signed Rs.1,500 crore deal to acquire R-27 air-to-air missiles from Russia for equipping</mark> <mark>Su-30MKI</mark> <mark>combat aircraft fleet of the Indian Air Force and for boosting its capabilities in beyond visual range warfare.</mark>

<mark>AUGUST 2019: DEFENCE CURRENT AFFAIRS</mark>
  1. India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully test-fired a Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSM) capable of operating all weather and all locations from the test range at Chandipur in Odisha on 4 August 2019. <mark>This state-of-the-art missile developed by DRDO is designed for the Army.</mark>

  2. The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) handed over the design of the Mobile Metallic Ramp (MMR) to the Indian Army on 20 August 2019. <mark>The DRDO handed over the design to the Indian Army in a ceremony held at the DRDO building. Deputy Army Chief Lt Gen Devraj Anbu and DRDO President G Satish Reddy were also present on the occasion.</mark>

  3. <mark>Maharashtra became first state in the country to adopt an Automated Multi-modal Biometric Identification System (AMBIS) i.e. digital fingerprint and iris scanning system to help police investigations. This system will soon be replicated by police forces of other states in the country.</mark>

  2. <mark>As per a recent order issued by Union Home Ministry, all Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) personnel will now retire at a uniform age of 60 years instead of 57 years for certain rank of officials.</mark>

  3. <mark>Union Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh has approved certain decisions regarding reorganisation of Army Headquarters. This approval for restructuring of Army headquarters was part of four studies conducted by Army for a leaner and more efficient force.</mark>

  4. <mark>Amazon India has launched a Military Veterans Employment programme in country. This initiative of e-commerce giant will create employment opportunities for military veterans as well as their spouses across company’s sort centres, delivery centres and fulfilment centres in India.</mark>

  5. <mark>Pakistan and China are conducting joint bilateral aerial exercise Shaheen VIII (Eagle VIII) in Chinese city of Holton, close to the Indian border near Ladakh. It was eight edition of this aerial exercise, which is conducted annually by India’s two neighbours since 2011.</mark>

  6. <mark>India Meteorological Department (IMD) has handed over its Kochi Cyclone Detection Radar (CDR) building to Indian Navy. In this regard, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Indian Navy (IN) and IMD. The MoU will enable Indian Navy to utilise CDR building within naval premises at Kochi for meteorological purposes.</mark>

  7. <mark>Pakistan successfully conducted night training launch of hypersonic surface-to-surface ballistic missile</mark> <mark>Hatf-III Ghaznavi</mark> <mark>from Sonmiani test range in Balochistan.</mark>

<mark>SEPTEMBER 2019: DEFENCE CURRENT AFFAIRS</mark>
  1. The Indian Air Force has deployed eight sophisticated Apache helicopters (Boeing AH-64 Apache) from the US at the Pathankot airbase. <mark>The deployment of Apache at this airbase will further increase the strength of the Indian Air Force. The Indian Air Force will get a total of 22 Apache helicopters from the US.</mark>

  2. <mark>Joint military maneuver between India and US-2019 is going to start from September 5 at Joint Base Lewis Macard near Washington. T</mark> his exercise will end on 18 September 2019. <mark>War exercises — 2019 is one of the longest running joint military training exercises.</mark>

  3. <mark>Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully test-fired the Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) from Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh on 11 September 2019.</mark> It can be operated by military forces without any vehicle or large missile launcher. <mark>Earlier three tests of this missile have been done.</mark>

  1. A joint military exercise called Friendship 2019 between India and Thailand will be held from 16 September to 29 September 2019 at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya. <mark>Both countries have conducted two such military exercises in the last one month.</mark>

  2. <mark>Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh made a successful flight in the indigenous light combat aircraft Tejas in Bengaluru on 19 September 2019. D</mark> efense Minister Rajnath Singh has created a new history by flying in Tejas. <mark>He has become the first Defense Minister of the country to fly in Tejas.</mark>

  3. <mark>INS 'Khanderi', the second submarine of the Scorpene class, was launched in Mumbai on 19 September 2019. This INS submarine was launched at a program organized at Mazgaon Dock Limited Shipyard.</mark> INS 'Khanderi', the second submarine of the Scorpene category, will be inducted into the Navy by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on 28 September 2019 in Mumbai. <mark>This submarine is fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.</mark>

  4. Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh formally launched Coast Guard coastal patrol vessel 'Varah' at Chennai Port Trust here on 25 September 2019. <mark>This special state-of-the-art ship will further increase the strength of the Indian Coast Guard.</mark>

  5. <mark>The Malabar military exercise between India-US and Japan has started on 26 September 2019 in the western Pacific Ocean near the city of Sasebo, Japan</mark> . The 23rd edition of the trilateral maritime exercise Malabar between the navies of the three countries is being organized along the coast of Japan from 26 September to 4 October 2019.

  6. <mark>The joint military exercise between India and Kazakhstan, Kajind-2019 will be held in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand recently. This exercise will run from 02 October to 15 October 2019. This exercise was first proposed from 26 August.</mark>

  7. Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has inducted the submarine INS Khanderi (INS Khanderi) into the Indian Navy fleet on 28 September 2019. <mark>The construction of this submarine took a full ten years. This submarine had to undergo several rigorous sea trials for more than two and a half years.</mark>

<mark>OCTOBER 2019: DEFENCE CURRENT AFFAIRS</mark>
  1. <mark>The 94th Raising Day of the Military Nursing Service (MNS) is being celebrated on 1 October 2019. On the occasion, nursing officers would re-dedicate themselves to render high quality, selfless nursing care to their patients by reading the</mark> <mark>Florence Nightingale Pledge</mark> <mark>, a modified version of the Hippocratic Oath.</mark>

  2. <mark>The annual military exercise called KAZIND 2019 between India and Kazakhstan army commenced at Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand on 3 October 2019. The year 2019 is the 4th edition of joint military exercise. The exercise will conclude on 15 October 2019 with a 72 hour exercise which will showcase the joint skills of soldiers while conducting Counter Terrorism and counter insurgency operations.</mark>

  1. <mark>The Indian Army has organized its biggest hill exercise 'Him Vijay' in Arunachal Pradesh on 07 October 2019. This is the first such practice in the northeastern state. This type of exercise is done to test the mobility and communication of soldiers in difficult terrain.</mark>

  2. <mark>The Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has increased the amount of financial assistance given to the family of the security personnel killed in the war by four times. With this, it has been approved to increase the compensation for all categories of casualties in the war from the existing two lakh rupees to eight lakh rupees.</mark>

<mark>5. Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh officially took delivery of the first of the 36 Rafale Combat Aircraft in Meriniyakh Province (France) on 08 October 2019. France has handed over RB 001 Rafale aircraft to India. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also performed the arms worship of India's first Rafale aircraft.</mark>

  1. <mark>Shakti-2019:</mark> <mark>Joint military exercise is being started in Rajasthan between India and France from 31 October 2019. The army of both the countries will share their experience and technical knowledge through this exercise. 'Shakti-2019' will be organized at the overseas training node at Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan.</mark>

  2. <mark>The Indian Air Force said that the accidental shoot down of Mi 17 chopper in February 2019 was a big mistake. A Spyder air defence system of India shot the chopper near Srinagar airfield. It was an unmanned aerial vehicle that mistook the chopper for a Pakistani chopper.</mark>

<mark>8. 14th edition of Indo–Mongolian joint military training called Exercise Nomadic Elephant-XIV commenced from 5 October 2019. It is being conducted over a period of 14 days from 5-18 October 2019 at Bakloh, a town in Himachal Pradesh.</mark>

  1. <mark>The Asia – Pacific Group of FATF (Financial Action Task Force) slammed Pakistan as the later failed to take actions against terror groups. On 5</mark><sup>th</sup> <mark>October, 2019, the group published report on Money Laundering and terror financing in Pakistan.</mark>

  2. <mark>President Ram Nath Kovind presented prestigious President’s Colours to the Army Aviation Corps. The president, who is also the Supreme Commander of armed forces, awarded the Colours at a grand ceremonial parade held at Combat Army Aviation Training School in Nashik, Maharashtra. He also visited the School of Artillery at Deolali.</mark>

  3. <mark>Navies of India and Bangladesh will participate for the first time in a IN-BN Bilateral Exercise at Visakhapatnam from 12 to 16 October 2019. This exercise which takes place a week after Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India, will entail development of mutual communication and sharing of best practices, thus adding a new dimension to IndiaBangladesh maritime relations.</mark>

  4. <mark>A joint military training exercise “Vajra Prahar” is conducted in Seattle between October 13, 2019 and October 28, 2019. The exercise is conducted alternately in India and US. The Special Forces and the Southern Command of Indian Armed Forces will participate in the exercise</mark>

  1. <mark>India and Japan will be holding a two-week-long joint military exercise called Dharma Guardian-2019 in Mizoram from 19 October to 2 November 2019. This Joint Military Exercise will be conducted at Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Vairengte, Mizoram.</mark>

  2. <mark>To boost to its firepower, the Indian army has inducted US made precision-guided Excalibur artillery ammunition and indigenous Dhanush howitzer in its inventory. The announcement regarding ammunition’s induction was made in an Army Commander’s Conference.</mark>

<mark>15. The Indian Air Force will be carrying out a joint military exercise called</mark> <mark>‘Shinyuu Maitri’</mark> <mark>with Japanese Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) from 17 to 23 October 2019. The joint exercise will be held at Air Force Station, Arjan Singh in Panagarh town, West Bengal.</mark>

<mark>16. Within few days of India and Japan Air Force joint exercise, another drill between armies of same countries will also get underway in eastern theatre.</mark>

  1. <mark>Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal for admission of girl children in Sainik schools across the country. These admissions will start from next academic session (2021-22) in a phased manner. For the smooth implementation of this directive, Defence Ministry has directed all concerned authorities for ensuring availability of necessary infrastructure as well as sufficient female staff in Sainik schools.</mark>
<mark>NOVEMBER 2019: DEFENCE CURRENT AFFAIRS</mark>
  1. <mark>The first bilateral naval exercise between India and Saudi Arabia is to be held in 2020. The countries also plan to collaborate in research and acquisition of military hardware, which will help broaden defence cooperation between India and Saudi Arabia.</mark>

  2. <mark>Union Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh said that the defence budget would be augmented by more than Rs.60,000 crore over the next five years. The estimation is because the MoD is to be exempted from the customs duty and goods and services tax (GST), which began on 1 October 2019.</mark>

  3. <mark>The Indian Army will have the first regiment of 18 indigenously upgraded Dhanush artillery guns in place by March 2020. It is expected that it will get all 114 guns to be completed by 2022. In April, the Ordnance Factory Gun Carriage Factory, Jabalpur, from the Army on February 18, OFB handed over the first batch of 6 Dhanush guns.</mark>

  4. <mark>INS Kamorta, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette, is exercising with Indonesian Warship KRI Usman Harun, a multi-role Corvette in the Bay of Bengal as part of the ongoing Indian Navy Indonesian Navy Bilateral Exercise Samudra Shakti from 06 Nov to 07 Nov 19.</mark>

  5. <mark>The Mid Planning Conference (MPC) for MILAN exercise was held at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command (HQENC) Visakhapatnam from 8-10 November 2019. The harbour and the sea phase of the exercise MILAN 2020 was discussed in detail with the delegates of the participating countries during the conference. Participants: Over 29 delegates from 17 friendly Foreign Navies participated in the three-day conference.</mark>

  1. <mark>The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to procure the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas (LCA) Mark-1A and Mark-2 and 114 new fighter jets in the next decade. IAF plans to buy LCA jets before the launching of the indigenous fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).</mark>

  2. <mark>Exercise Indra 2019, a joint tri-service exercise between India and Russia, has been scheduled to be held in December 2019. In the exercise, the mechanized contingents, fighter and transport aircraft and ships of the armed forces of India and Russia will be participating.</mark>

  3. <mark>Exercise Tiger Triumph, a joint tri-services Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) between India and the US, commenced at Visakhapatnam on 13 November. The exercise will be held from 13-21 November 2019. Aim: The aim of the exercise is to grow the partnership between India and the US.</mark>

  4. <mark>Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the first night trial of Agni-II from Dr. Abdul Kalam Island successfully off Odisha coast. The missile had a strike range of 2000 km.</mark>

  5. <mark>The Sudarshan Chakra Corps of the Indian Army conducted the Sindhu Sudarshan exercise in Barmer, Rajasthan on 16 November. The exercise will continue till 5 December 2019.</mark>

  6. <mark>The Bilateral Maritime Exercise Za’ir-Al-Bahr, Roar of the Sea, is being conducted from 1721 November 2019 in Doha, Qatar. The exercise is held between the Indian Navy and Qatari Emiri Naval Forces.</mark>

  7. <mark>Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) plans to extend the range of weather beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile ASTRA to nearly double to 160 km of its existing range. This will make it the most lethal BVR missile.</mark>

  8. <mark>The USA has approved the sale of 13 naval guns and $1 billion worth of equipment to India. The aim of the move by the US government is to help it meet the current and future threats. The announcement was made by the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).</mark>

  9. <mark>India and Singapore have agreed to conduct the trilateral maritime exercise involving Singapore, India, and Thailand annually from 2020.</mark>

  10. <mark>The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is to host the first-ever counter-terrorism table-top exercise (CT-TTX) for the Quad countries. The exercise is being conducted on 21-22 November 2019.</mark>

  11. <mark>DRDO successfully testfired two indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-2 missiles from the Interim Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha. The test was done as a part of a user trial by the Indian Army.</mark>

  12. <mark>Indian Navy will host a multi-nation military drill called Milan 2020 at Visakhapatnam in March 2020.MILAN denotes Multilateral Naval Exercise. The event will witness the participation of several countries.</mark>

  1. <mark>The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) are to conduct the Joint Military Training (JMT) from 31 October to 12 December at the Kalaikunda Air Force Station in West Bengal.</mark>

  2. <mark>Joint military exercise SURYA KIRAN-XIV between India and Nepal is to be conducted at Salijhandi, Rupendehi district of Nepal from 3-16 December 2019.</mark>

<mark>DECEMBER 2019: DEFENCE CURRENT AFFAIRS</mark>
  1. <mark>Indian Navy successfully test-fired the 290 km strike range Brahmos supersonic cruise missile. The supersonic cruise missile was test-fired in the Arabian Sea.</mark>

  2. <mark>Border Security Force (BSF) personnel celebrated the 55th raising day on 1 December 1965. PM Modi greeted the BSF personnel on the day.</mark>

  3. <mark>The seventh edition of Exercise Mitra Shakti-VII 2019 commenced on 1 December 2019 at Aundh Military Station, Pune. The exercise is held between Indian and Sri Lanka. The exercise is a part of the United Nations peacekeeping forces.</mark>

  4. <mark>Sub-Lieutenant Shivangi of the Indian Navy became the first naval woman pilot in India. She joined operational duties at the Kochi naval base on 2 December 2019. Shivangi received the qualification wings from Vice Admiral AK Chawla, the chief of Southern Naval Command. She will fly the Naval Dornier.</mark>

  5. <mark>Exercise HAND-IN-HAND 2019 is to be conducted at Umroi, Meghalaya. The 8th IndiaChina joint training is held under the United Nations mandate. The exercise will be held from 7- 20 December 2019.</mark>

  6. <mark>India successfully conducted a night test-trial of the indigenously developed nuclearcapable surface-to-surface Prithvi-II missile off complex-3 of Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha coast.</mark>

  7. <mark>Exercise INDRA 2019 is a joint, tri-services exercise held between India and Russia. The exercise will be conducted in India from 10-19 December 2019. It will hold simultaneously at Babina, Pune, and Goa.</mark>

  8. <mark>Exercise Hand-in-Hand-2019 commenced at Umroi, Meghalaya on 7 December 2019. The exercise is held between India and China. The 8th edition of the exercise is being held under the United Nations mandate. The 14-day long exercise will be held from 7-20 December 2019.</mark>

  1. <mark>The seventh edition of Exercise Mitra Shakti-VII 2019 concluded on 14 December 2019 at Aundh Military Station, Pune. The exercise was held between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army. The exercise is a part of the United Nations peacekeeping forces. The exercise was held from 1-14 December 2019.</mark>

  2. <mark>Exercise INDRA-2019 is the second edition of Joint Tri-Services Exercise between the Indian Armed Forces and the Russian Armed Forces. It is being conducted from 10-20 December 2019 simultaneously at Pune and Gwalior for Air Force elements.</mark>

  3. <mark>Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on test-fired a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile off the coast of Odisha successfully on 17 December 2019.</mark>

  6. <mark>The second edition of Exercise INDRA 2019 concluded at Babina, Pune, and Goa on 19 December. The joint tri-services exercise was held between India and Russia from 10-19 December 2019.</mark>

  7. <mark>Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted two test firings as a part of the series of flight trials of the Pinaka missile system.</mark>

  8. <mark>The Indian Navy conducted Exercise Apharan, a large scale Anti Hijacking Exercise off the Port of Kochi on 18 December 2019. The exercise involved all stakeholders. This is the first time such a large scale exercise was held in Kerala.</mark>

  1. <mark>The Indian Navy issued directions to ban the use of all smartphones and social networking platforms on board ships and naval bases.</mark>

  2. <mark>Indian Army General Bipin Rawat named as the country’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). Chief of Defence Staff will be a 4-star General, the principal military advisor to the defence minister, and will head the new Department of Military Affairs. Chief of Defence Staff ensures the jointness in training, logistics, and procurement of the three services. General Rawat is the first officer to hold the post of the Chief of Defence Staff. Defence Ministry amended the army, air force, and navy rules by bringing in a new clause that allows the CDS to serve up to a maximum age of 65 years.</mark>

  3. <mark>Vice Chief of the Army Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane took charge as a new Army Chief. He will succeed Gen Bipin Rawat after a three-year stint as Army chief.</mark>
